The Kokoda Track campaign or Kokoda Trail campaign was part of the Pacific War of World War II. The campaign consisted of a series of battles fought between July and November 1942 in what was then the Australian Territory of Papua.
The Kokoda Track or Trail is a single-file foot thoroughfare that runs 96 kilometres (60 mi) overland – 60 kilometres (37 mi) in a straight line – through the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea. The track was the location of the 1942 World War II battle between Japanese and Allied – primarily Australian – forces in what was then the Australian territory of Papua.
Directed by Alister Grierson. With Jack Finsterer, Travis McMahon, Simon Stone, Luke Ford. A bitter battle is fought between Australian and Japanese soldiers along the Kokoda trail in New Guinea during World War II.
After years of painstaking research on the track itself, and with the aid of the fast-thinning ranks of both Australian and Japanese veterans, Bill James has played an important part in uncovering the ‘lost battlefields’ of Kokoda. His publication, Field Guide to the Kokoda Track, is regarded as the ‘trekkers bible’.
While visiting Fiji, I was introduced to Kokoda - a Fijian dish made from freshly caught local fish. Just like the Central and South American dish Ceviche, Kokoda is raw fish that's 'cooked' by marinating the fish in lemon and lime juice. If you're looking for a fresh and summery dish to make, try this recipe.
Finally, on 2 November, Kokoda was retaken. The Australians had one more tough battle to fight at Oivi-Gorari, where the Japanese were determined to make another stand, before they were able to finish the advance over the mountains. By 18 November the Australians had reached the Kumusi River. The battle for the Kokoda Track was over.
