Purgatory Flats is a nice and easy hike that is great for the entire family. It is easy to get to and one of those rare hikes that proceeds downhill from the get go (until you hike back out). It was perfect for me as I severely sprained my left ankle about a month ago on a trail run and this was the first hike I attempted after a nasty sprain.
A hike on the Purgatory Flats Trail is anything but purgatory —unless you start sucking air due to the high elevation! If you are hanging out in and around Durango and gearing up to travel the absurdly scenic Highway 550, this is a fantastic option for a short, easy day hike. A Scenic Beginning
From the moment he gets to the eponymous Purgatory Flats, not a single thing he does makes a lick of sense. Least of all performing impromptu dining room table surgery on an wounded drug dealer while his dangerous relatives look on. After doing the medico bit, the doctor then hangs around the hideout for days on end, for no apparent reason.
We hiked the Purgatory Flats trail across from Purgatory ski resort. There is a 1,000 elevation change from the trailhead to the Animas River. You can walk part or all of the trail. There are plenty of places to stop and rest (flatlanders may need a moment to catch their breath). Take plenty of water to drink.
